Nice, I can relate.

Sometimes I feel different in my desire to tackle theoretical subjects and understand what underpins practice, especially in a world increasingly obsessed with quick wins and surface-level content, like LinkedIn posts optimized for engagement rather than insight.

I've been freelance for twenty years now, and last year was a little more difficult. Fewer customers, less interest in SQL Server, maybe slowly going unfashionable, not sure. I've sometimes considered accepting a full-time position. But that would be a mistake. I'd be trapped by it, and lose the freedom to think and keep pursuing the projects I want to develop.

Thanks - yes that call to safety with full time is even more speculative today. With so many tech layoffs my thought was - there is no “safe” - so treat that as permission to follow your natural interests.

Regarding consulting market changes and SQL Server - I’ve heard similar stories from my other consulting friends.
